Waterloo Region Emerging Composer Competition
We have just wrapped up the Waterloo Region Emerging Composer Competition, funded by a grant from the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund. The competition, run as a partnership between the Faculty of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University, and NUMUS, was open to composers under the age of 40 who either lived in Waterloo Region or had completed a degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. The winner received a prize fee of $2000 which functioned as a commissioned to write a new work for cello and orchestra to be premiered by cellist Elinor Frey with the WLU Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paul Pulford.
The competition was a huge success, drawing twenty-six entries from as far away as Winnipeg, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Japan. Jury members John Estacio (Edmonton), Elinor Frey (Montreal), Linda Smith (Toronto) and Paul Pulford (Waterloo) were “blown away” by the level of the applicants. The winners of the competition were:
Winner: Colin Labadie (Kitchener-Waterloo)
Runner-up: Nick Storring (Toronto)
Honourable Mentions: Jennifer Butler (Vancouver), Chris Thornborrow (Toronto)
Colin’s cello concerto will be performed at the Faculty of Music & NUMUS’ concert For Cello and Orchestra on January 29, 2016 at 8pm by Elinor Frey and the WLUSO.
Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry.
